History

A former church built in 1886 , a Grade II listed building from the victorian period.

Like most Victorian churches, it is in the ‘Gothic Revival’ style;  this drew its ideas from medieval architecture but, in Joseph Goddard’s hands, they are employed with great imagination.  St Barnabas’ is particularly unusual in having timber arches springing from the stone pillars of the nave and in being lit, high in the roof, from clerestory windows which are square and continuous. The building is far from plain.  Outside, it boasts an octagonal tower and spirelet.  Inside, there are galleries, wood carving on the choirstalls and pulpit .In time, chapels were created.  The north transept was furnished as a Lady Chapel for small weekday services whilst the south transept became the War Memorial Chapel.  This contains memorials to those who died in the two World Wars.  Amongst them is a plaque to the Reverend Bernard Vann, a former curate of St Barnabas’, and complex tracery in the main windows.

Towards the end of the twentieth century, support for St Barnabas’ began to decline as society in general changed and people of other faiths moved into the area.  The congregation dwindled and found it increasingly difficult to maintain the buildings.  In 2011, services were transferred to the School where the congregation continues to meet every Sunday.  The Church buildings were offered for sale and the former Vicarage was taken over by the School.  In 2015, the Church itself became a banqueting hall, thus preserving the building as a local landmark.
